Heroes abound in times of need.

The South Dakota Army National Guard is supporting the state's rescue and recovery efforts in the wake of the early October blizzard that blanketed and devastated the Black Hills.

Nearly 50 Soldiers and Airmen have been called to active duty to assist in restoring power in Harding, Meade, Perkins and Pennington counties.

The call for Guard assistance came early Saturday morning and coordination began immediately after more than 38,000 customers suffered power losses throughout the storm. it was also reported that up to 3,800 power poles snapped under the weight of the snow and ice that encased the lines.

Even though no travel was advised, several Soldiers trekked on foot several miles to reach the Guard headquarters on Camp Rapid in Rapid City to set up operations.

Our undying appreciation and thanks go Alpha and Bravo Batteries of the 1-147th Field Artillery Battalion, 109th Regional Support Group, 842nd Engineer Company, 200th Engineer Company, 155th Engineer Company, Joint Force Headquarters and the 114th Fighter Wing.
