A South Dakota man will spend six months in jail for his eighth DWI conviction.

South Dakota has recently ranked the most lenient state in the nation for DWI's with no minimum jail time for first or second convictions. (WalletHub)

Circuit Court Judge Joni Cutler on Tuesday sentenced 42-year-old David Wells to a mere 180 days in jail with work release.

Furthermore, Wells can get his driver's license back three years.

The Yankton man was arrested in October after he was pulled over for running a red light in Sioux Falls. He registered a blood alcohol level of 0.174. The legal limit is 0.08.

Wells was convicted for DWI in 1989, 1993, twice in 1996, 2000, 2001, 2012, and 2015.
