South Dakotans are one step closer to being able to hail an Uber driver in the state.

On Friday, February 5, the Transportation Network Company Bill went in front of the House Commerce and Energy Committee and passed with a unanimous vote.

The sponsor of the TNC Bill in South Dakota, Representative Mark Willadsen of Sioux Falls says the legislation model his bill uses is the same one that has passed in Washington D.C. and 28 other states.

According to Willadsen, "Transportation Network Company drivers would be on our list of drivers in South Dakota that would be excluded from the requirement of having commercial license plates."

TNC drivers would not be required to obtain a commercial drivers license either.

Braid Nail who is with risk management for Uber says the company is excited about the possibility of starting to operate here in South Dakota.

He also explained how insurance coverage will work for TNC drivers.

TNC will provide the primary coverage for any TNC driver with a passenger in the vehicle. The drivers personal auto policy will never be asked to respond. We have a primary auto policy with one million dollar third party limits, according to Nail.

Up next, the TNC Bill hits the on ramp to the House floor.
