The 2015 gas price summer slide should continue into the autumn months. It’s a traditional trend save for when a hurricane rips the coast.

Motorists saw the national average at its lowest point for the Labor Day holiday in more than a decade. AAA reports motorists nationwide are paying an average price of $2.38 per gallon at the pump today, a savings of $1.05 per gallon in comparison to one year ago. More than that, the national average price for regular gasoline has fallen 23 consecutive days for a total of 29 cents per gallon.

Today’s snapshot shows a rosy picture. However absolutes in the oil trade are hard to come by according to AAA South Dakota spokeswoman Marilyn Buskohl. “Prices are expected to continue to slide as driving demand experiences a seasonal decrease heading into the fall. If the price of crude oil rises dramatically or refineries have problems performing routine maintenance, all bets are off.”

South Dakota’s average price at the pump for self-serve regular gasoline has tumbled 20 cents over the last 30 days. Today’s average, $2.51 per gallon, is just under a dollar, below the price recorded on Sept. 9, 2014.

The highest prices in South Dakota for fuel according to the latest survey are in Rapid City ($2.74) among ten communities on the grid. Sioux Falls ($2.28) and Vermillion ($2.33) pay the least. Worthy of note is Pierre with a 20 cent drop in price over the past week.
