Yikes! Wanna know what's scarier than doing a triple backflip off the high dive? The thought that the city might double and even triple the city pool rates in some cases.

That's a proposal being discussed at the moment in Sioux Falls.

Soon it could get more expensive to take a dip in a city pool if the Sioux Falls Parks and Recreation department has its way.

The proposal would double and even triple some of the rates of daily and season passes.
It would also eliminate free pool passes the city offers to low-income families.

The going rate for a swim at any of the city's pool facilities right now ranges from $3 to $4 dollars a day. The new proposal from the park and rec department would jack that up by at least a buck. It would also double the cost of season passes.

The thought of something like that happening has a number of Sioux Falls residents concerned. The proposed changes have many people afraid they will no longer be able to swim in city pools because they will not be able to afford the price hikes.

Currently, the price for a child's pass is $15. Under the proposal, by 2018, it would jump to 60 dollars. A family pass would also jump from $70 to $150 in the same time period under the proposal.

Tracy Turbak, the Finance Director for the city of Sioux Falls says, upping the prices will keep the city more in-line with other pool rates in comparable Midwest cities.

According to Turbak, "In the context of our outdoor rates we are significantly behind other communities. And so you'll see a recommended phased approach to get out us up to something closer."

Some Sioux Falls city council members have also expressed concern over the proposed price hikes. They’re asking for public input and opinion before they decide on the proposal.

The Parks and Recreation Board will decide on the proposal June 16, if they approve, it will go to the Council on July 7.
