Some South Dakota Agencies Seek Payment for Search Costs
MITCHELL, S.D. (AP) - Some law enforcement agencies involved in the search for a prisoner who walked away from a transport van in southeastern South Dakota and disappeared are billing the transport company.
Others tell The Daily Republic newspaper that they won't bill Arkansas-based Inmate Services Corp. because they were just doing their job.
Oscar Antonio Herrera-Menjivar is still at large after his escape in July. Authorities say he escaped when the van's driver stopped at a convenience store and the secondary guard fell asleep.
Herrera-Menjivar was being transported from Florida to Nebraska to face an allegation that he sexually assaulted a 14-year-old girl he met on Facebook.
