Sioux Wheelers Wheelchair Basketball Program A Success Both On And Off The Court

When it comes to organizations, the "Sioux Wheelers" take a backseat to no one.

If you're not familiar with the "Sioux Wheelers," it's a wheelchair basketball team based out of Sioux Falls, comprised of players from the tri-state region who are batting their own disabilities.

Rather than being relegated to sitting on the sidelines, these young men and women are instead out on the basketball court competing against some of the best athletes in the country.

The team recently qualified for the National Wheelchair Basketball Tournament in Louisville, Kentucky this past April and finished second in the country.

Two players with the team, Carissa Rubio and Michael Mitchell, were named to the Women's and Men's First Varsity Team.

Michael has also been recruited to play Division One wheelchair basketball for the University of Illinois this fall, where he'll major in pre-med.

Carissa will be a senior at Sioux Falls New Tech High and is being recruited by D-1 schools in both Texas and Arizona.

Coach Paul Weiland, along with both Carissa and Michael, recently stopped by the radio station to talk about the program and the success it has enjoyed both on and off the court.

The first thing that needs to be pointed out is when they arrived  - no one was in a wheelchair.
