Sioux Falls Police Department Information Officer Sam Clemens says a number of guns were ripped off from an unlocked home this week.

"The homeowner discovered the theft on Tuesday afternoon. There were six guns that were missing from his home. The house was left unlocked. The last time he saw the guns was on Sunday. Sometime over that time period the guns were taken. We don't have a lot of information or suspects yet. The homeowner believes the residence was unlocked at the time."

Clemens says homeowners need to lock up their properties.

"We are still seeing a lot of thefts from unlocked garages. You leave the garage open or a back door open it's easy for somebody to get into the house. If you have things of value the bad guys are going to help themselves to it."

Aside from locking up, Clemens says it's important to know your neighbors who can report suspicious activity at your home when you're away.
