Darcy Jensen of Prairie View Prevention Services in Sioux Falls says many young people are taking prescription drugs without a doctor's prescription.

"Oftentimes parents and kids who may be the ones that are using don't see prescriptions as something to be mindful of or are considered dangerous. Certainly if you're taking it as prescribed by your doctor, that's one issue. Right now we see about 13 percent of the kids are abusing prescriptions that not for them."

Jensen says the intensity of the high from certain drugs is attractive to teens.

"Quite often it's a prescription for pain medication. Those pills when taken in large quantities produce a very significant high. That's what the kids are seeking."

If you have prescription pills in the medicine cabinet that you're not using, Jensen urges you to discard them.

"About 55 to 65 percent of young people are getting those prescriptions from home. So it's being mind full of what prescriptions you have at home.  If you're not using it, get rid of it."

And you can do that by taking the pills to the Law Enforcement Center in Sioux Falls and putting the medicine into the drop box located in the lobby.
