A store employee working at a business near 10th street and Sycamore Avenue in Sioux Falls was pepper sprayed by an alleged shoplifter on Friday, December 16 (2016).

KSFY TV is reporting the incident took place around 3:30 that afternoon, when the employee suspected the customer was attempting to shoplift items from the store.

The employee began to follow the man around the store to keep an eye on him, causing the suspect to leave the store. Once he did, the employee followed the suspect outside to see where he went.

According to Sargent Paul Creviston with the Sioux Falls Police Department, the suspect then returned to the front of the store where the employee was standing and pepper sprayed him in the face, before fleeing on foot.

After the incident, the store employee was taken to a Sioux Falls hospital for treatment.

It's not known at this time if the suspect made off with any items from the store.
