Sioux Falls State of the City: Challenges, Acccolades
Mayor Mike Huether’s State of the city address on Tuesday March 28th covered the growth and challenges of the city and government in recent months. Huether said he along with city council needed to address difficult things, like increased fees for utilities and infrastructure.
Here's the question Sioux Falls. Who should ultimately pay for programs and services, those who use them or general taxpayers? Not addressing fees would be an irresponsible to do. Remember, there is no such thing as 'free' in government.
With the growth level originally projected at 4 percent, but actually coming in at 2 and a half percent, financial responsibility is crucial according to the Mayor. Huether indicates they've met the the financial challenge and will make additional adjustments if needed.
The state of the city also highlighted accolades including the Wall Street Journal's recent article citing Sioux Falls as the fifth most affordable place to live
With 14 months left in his term, Huether reflected on the last 7 years, saying they’ve added the equivalent of the population of Watertown to the city, while improving infrastructure.
Affordable housing and community health were both noted as upcoming challenges.
