Sioux Falls School District Staff Don’t like Individualism [OPINION]
The continuing effort by bureaucrats within the Sioux Falls School District to create a ‘one size fits’ all policy dealing with teachers and their children before and after school has gone from laughable to incredulous.
For the record, I have one grandchild attending classes in the system. I have no relatives paid by the district, and nobody asked me to write this.
It is still unclear to most of us if this is a solution looking for a problem or the inability of a few administrators to deal with individuals.
There are 20,000+ students in the district, a few thousand teachers, hundreds of administrators, and support staff. A “one size fits all policy” won’t work. Each situation, each teacher/parent and student are different.
For guidance on dealing with unique situations, staff bureaucrats and elected board members should look at the “individual educational plans” which are used to assist hundreds of students succeed when they don’t fit into the regular system.
To my friends, and acquaintances on the board, and to the staff which is supposed to be responding to them, allow each school principal to set the rules for each situation in each building. Most kids can be left alone in their parents classroom for short periods of time without them starting the school on fire, vandalizing the building or climbing onto the roof to see if they can fly.
The role and job of a teacher are completely different than other work in the district. They are the backbone of what you are supposed to be doing. Everybody else is added on. Recently, your superintendent, Dr. Pam Homan, said she was having trouble finding qualified elementary school teachers. With that as a reality, maybe allowing flexibility rather than creating a rigid rule, would be what a prudent person would do.
I think you should tell your staff to get back to educating and stop micromanaging every situation. If you don’t trust your principals to use common sense, maybe they should be promoted to an administrative position. Possibly in HR. (Written with tongue firmly in cheek).
And one more thing: The Mark Twain neighborhood should remain the Mark Twain neighborhood. It’s a new building on the same site. You wouldn’t change the name of any of the high schools if they were rebuilt on the same site. If memory serves you kept the Washington name, even though your moved the school.
It feels like somebody has too much time on their hands and not enough real educational improvement work to do.
