On Tuesday, May 19, 2015, the Sioux Falls Police Department began a campaign to target motorists driving in an unsafe manner. Due to the increased traffic enforcement and also voluntary compliance because of the publicity, some residents in the area say the driving in the southeast part of Sioux Falls has improved dramatically.

One of the biggest concerns that lead to the creation of the campaign was motor noise. The noise came from cars, trucks, motorcycles, and other vehicles. Some of the noise was created as a result of street racing and exhibition driving, while the bulk of the noise complaints came from loud exhaust on both cars and motorcycles

In an effort to make the roadways safer and limit the noise generated by motorists, officers will enforce all vehicle laws equally. By City Ordinance, motor vehicle noise is limited to 80 decibels measured from 25 feet away. This is a rough equivalent of the noise a garbage disposal or car wash makes.

It may be hard to determine if a vehicle's exhaust is above 80 decibels, so the Police Department will conduct free checks of an exhaust with a decibel meter. If the vehicle is over the limit, the officer will let the owner know and no citations will be issued. The free checks will be held every Wednesday in June from 6 to 7:00 pm at the Law Enforcement Center, 320 West 4th Street. Free exhaust checks will also take place on Saturday, June 13, from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM and Sunday, June 21, from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM.
