Sioux Falls police say someone is stealing gasoline in the southwest area of the city, and they're doing it by drilling holes in vehicle gas tanks.

Information Officer Sam Clemens says they've had seven reports since January 8th, with three in the past few days.

Clemens says each case is the same, with the thief or thieves drilling one to three holes in the gas tank of a truck or SUV in an apartment parking lot.

He says it's not known how much gas is being collected, but the victim in one of the latest cases reported losing $55 in gasoline, and damage to the tanks has been estimated at $500 to $2,000.

Clemens says the person or persons responsible could possibly be charged with intentional damage to property (vandalism), theft or tampering with a motor vehicle.
