Domestic violence is the leading cause of injury to women between 15 and 44 years of age in the United States. That is not surprising to Sioux Falls Police Spokesman Sam Clemens.

"It cuts across all races, economic factors - all areas of people are affected by this crime. It's one of the things that officers spend a lot of time on. We also spend time on training on the problem. Domestics can be pretty volatile at times."

Unfortunately, Clemens says some victims of domestic violence keep it to themselves.

"Letting people know what domestic violence is. It is not to be tolerated. The other side is getting people to report domestic violence. Some victims may be scared and fear retribution in the future. But, we really can't do anything to help people if we don't know about it."

Aside from women, men also suffer abuse and some of them are afraid to tell authorities.
