On June 8, 2016, at 2:37 AM, Sioux Falls Police were dispatched to 2401 South Norton Avenue for a family dispute, where a male and female were heard arguing.

On arrival officers observed blood outside the residence and contacted a female at the front door. While officers were speaking with the female, a male subject ran from the residence to the west.

Officers began searching the area and found unsecured scaffolding to the roof of the Gilbert Science Center on the Augustana University campus. Officers began to check the roof area for the fleeing subject. Officers located the male on the roof, and he ran toward one of the officers who was by the scaffolding. The male subject charged this officer and kicked him while he was right by the edge of the three-story building, almost causing the officer to be pushed off of the third-story roof. The male was apprehended at the base of the scaffolding.

The male was identified as 23-year-old Michael James Northcutt Jr. He was lodged at the Minnehaha County Jail for aggravated assault on law enforcement as well as various other charges to include a parole hold. The involved officer received minor injuries and has returned to work.
