Sioux Falls Police Captain Blaine Larson says a grandmother was highly intoxicated while taking care of her 2 year old grandchild.

"A neighborhood resident contacted authorities and told them a grandma was watching a two-year-old and was concerned about her safety. That being the child. We went to the home on a well being check. Grandma was extremely intoxicated. She is a 53-year-old Sioux Falls resident. The mother is basically gone and whereabouts unknown. I believe she is on a trip out of state somewhere . There is no phone and no way to contact the mother. Given the level of grandma's intoxication, we went ahead and did a protective hold on the child."

Larson says both the grandmother and mother could face charges.

"We do a report and send it over to Social Services. Right now the child is in custody right  now. There is the potential of charges. We also look at reuniting the child with mom. When you leave, you have to make sure a child is with a safe caregiver. Mother could also be charged as well in a deal like this."
