Sioux Falls Police Officer Sam Clemens says violence erupted when a boyfriend pulled a knife on his girlfriend in an apartment.

"They went to a back bedroom and were talking about their relationship. One thing led to another and he was upset," explained Clemens. "The boyfriend punched her several times. He pulled out a knife, threatened her with the knife. He then cut off her shirt. She had tried to leave the room several times. But, he was able to keep her inside the room and wouldn't let her leave. Eventually he put the knife down, left the apartment, got a ride to a different place where a neighbor was able to get hold of the police."

Clemens says 23-year-old Tyrel Wilson Shields of Sioux Falls was arrested and charged with kidnapping and aggravated assault domestic.

The girlfriend didn't receive serious injuries.
