Police Information Officer Sam Clemens says a Sioux Falls man was arrested after he allegedly attacked his girlfriend.

"We were actually called to an apartment on another matter. While officers were dealing with that situation, they noticed a woman had bruising to her throat. Once they figured out what happened after talking to the woman---it turns out on Sunday night she had an argument with her boyfriend. He ended up grabbing by the neck, threw her down and strangled her to the point where she lost consciousness. She came to and went to a relative's house but did not immediately report the abuse to police."

Clemens says domestic violence is more common than most people think.

"Some of them are serious and some aren't so serious. That's one of the things about domestic violence. It seems to cut across all income levels and groups of people. It can affect anybody at anytime!"

Clemens says 34-year-old Carlos Lopez of Sioux Falls has been charged with aggravated assault domestic.
