If you're in the habit of leaving your car doors unlocked with the keys inside---Sioux Falls Police Information Officer Sam Clemens has a story worth hearing!

"Earlier this week, somebody had this car parked in the driveway. They left a spare set of keys inside the car. Car was unlocked and somebody found their way in and got the keys. They then ripped off the car. We had a relative that saw the stolen vehicle. He alerted police. They were able to stop the car. The driver stayed with it and the passenger took off running. We caught him nearby. The driver was arrested for possession of a stolen vehicle along with other charges and taken to jail. The passenger was also charged with fleeing police and taken to jail."

Unfortunately, Clemens says this type of crime happens much too often in Sioux Falls.

"The vast majority of the stolen cars---the cars are left somewhere in the car...sometimes in the ignition, the cup holder, and other places. When you leave the car unlocked and the keys are in it--people are going to find it."

In light of the holiday season, Clemens urges residents to lock personal property in the truck of their vehicles. If they don't have a trunk, cover packages with a blanket.
