Sioux Falls Police Information Officer Sam Clemens says a student at Axtell Park Middle School was charged with bringing a pocket knife to school on Wednesday.

"The staff at the school ended up finding it in his backpack. They alerted the school resource officer. The student was then arrested for having a weapon on school grounds."

Clemens says the 14-year-old boy didn't show the weapon to other students.

"This was one he had in his backpack. The student didn't give a reason why he had it with him. But, he didn't threaten anybody with it or display it."

Clemens offers this advice to students that are thinking about taking a weapon to school.

"If students do bring a weapon---whether it's a pocket knife or firearms---they will be arrested and charged with having a weapon on school grounds. Both the Sioux Falls school district and the police department have essentially zero tolerance. If anybody has any weapons, they will be arrested and charged."

The boy was turned over to his mother.
