Sioux Falls Man Wins Second World Bench Press Championship
A Sioux Falls man is again the world bench press champion and world record holder.
Jona Leo won the over 120 kilogram (264.5 pound) division at the International Powerlifting Federation's World Bench Press Championship in Rødby, Denmark on Sunday. His lift of 392.5 kg (865 lbs) defeated the two-time defending champion Fredrik Smulter of Finland.
In each of the past two years in which Smulter won the title, Leo finished second.
This is the second world championship. He won the title in 2013 with a then world record of 360.5 kg (794.5 lbs).
To put into perspective how much weight Jona can lift, the most weight known to be lifted by a NFL lineman was 705 pounds by hall of famer Larry Allen. But to further illustrate that point here are a few things that are within his capabilities, assuming they could be balanced in a way he could lift them.
- A Harley-Davidson Heritage Softail - 755 pounds
- A large adult grizzly bear - 790 pounds
- A bull elk - 705 - 730 pounds
- Three of me - 275 x 3 = 825 pounds.
