Sioux Falls Police Department say a man faces assault charges following an argument with his girlfriend over the weekend.

"He punched her several times and pulled out a knife, swung it several times and ended up cutting the victim on the nose. Things calmed down afterwards," explained Sioux Falls Police Department Public Information Officer Sam Clemens.

"The two were driving around and then the boyfriend started punching his girlfriend again. She was able to stop near 14th and Minnesota and created a distraction. She got out of the car and called police, He was arrested for aggravated assault. She was going to seek medical attention at a later time."

Clemens says incidents like this one take place much too often in Sioux Falls.

"It's something we see several times a day. It's one of those things if people are involved we would like them to call police as soon as possible. We will get them some help and hopefully out of the abusive relationship."

One in four women and one in seven men will experience severe physical violence by an intimate partner in their lifetime.
