The assault of a man who was attacked with a hammer and a crowbar as he slept is under investigation by Sioux Falls Police.

Officer Sam Clemens says the man told police he was sleeping on a couch early Tuesday in an apartment in the 4200 block of West Valhalla Boulevard when several people came in and attacked him.

The 21-year-old man told officers he was punched, and when he tried to run he was hit with a small sledgehammer and then a crowbar.

He says the attackers hit him with their fists as he ran to hide in the bathroom, but he was finally able to escape the apartment.

The suspects then left.

The victim thought one of them was Hispanic, wearing a black jacket and a "winter-type" hat, and he also had a handgun.

The female suspect was white, with blonde hair and the male suspect with the crowbar had a dark-colored cap, also described as "winter-style."

The victim went to a hospital, but the extent of his injuries was not known.
