One person can make a difference. An unnamed fellow used his semi-truck to save people from a mess at 41st and Louise Avenue Thursday night.

The deluge of rain flooded the busiest intersection in the city. People were undeterred by the massive lake to enter the risky situation.

Street Fleet Manager Galynn Huber estimated hundreds of vehicles coming from all directions stranded in that spot. “The water was about three to four feet deep.”

An attempt to put barricades in place proved futile. However, Huber says one man took control. “There was a truck driver with a semi that said, ‘Looks like people aren’t paying any attention and going around the police cars. I’ll fix that for you.’ He took his semi and drove it right across 41st Street and blocked it right by Sioux Falls Ford so no one would drive into that (deep) water.”

Things happened so fast, Huber was unable to express his gratitude. “Whoever that was, thank you that helped us out a lot.”

Around the Empire Mall was one of the hard hit areas stretching from 41st to 49th on Louise. The Hy-Vee at 49th and Louise reportedly had water covering the entire floor space of the building, but never closed. 49th and Louise was the last area to open about 3:00 AM Friday morning.
