From Tuesday, September 22, to Friday, September 25, 2015, South Cliff Avenue will be closed from East 12th Street to East 14th Street as work to replace two sets of railroad tracks located just north of the Big Sioux River bridge is underway.

Traffic on Cliff Avenue will be detoured along 10th Street, 11th Street, Second Avenue, and 14th Street. Traffic control will be in place. The closure is expected to last only four days, but traffic delays should be expected.

Work will include replacement of railroad tracks, crossing improvements, and asphalt patching. BNSF Railway will perform the track and crossing improvements. The City of Sioux Falls Public Works Street Division will place the asphalt.

“This project, along with additional planned improvements next year, will provide a smoother and safer drive across the railroad tracks in this area of town,” says Joshua Peterson, Principal Engineer. “We appreciate everyone’s patience during this brief closure of Cliff Avenue.”

In 2016, the city plans to install new signals on the railroad tracks at this crossing including gates arms to prevent drivers from trying to beat the train. Additionally, traffic signals at 12th and Cliff will adjust to stop north-south traffic and allow east-west traffic to flow easier.
