Lord knows the rain was needed and much appreciated in the Sioux Falls area. The early yield from these showers is a bunch of mosquitoes.

The City of Sioux Falls Mosquito Control sees fit to act because of the increase in mosquito populations over the last week. Thus, the first citywide spray event for 2015 will commence Monday through Wednesday (June 8–10, 2015), weather permitting.

As an additional courtesy, the bike path will be sprayed one to two times a week throughout the summer months in order to keep mosquito populations under wraps. The bike path being so close to the Big Sioux River would be another incentive to keep close tabs on the mosquito population.

A map on the City’s website outlines the targeted zones where spraying will occur. Sioux Falls Zones 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, and 8 are scheduled for spraying. You can get a link to the map here or visit siouxfalls.org/mosquito.

This targeted spray effort is being conducted in response to increased numbers of mosquito populations. The Sioux Falls Mosquito Control Program follows a phased-response guideline created by the CDC that is used to determine when spray events and other treatments are needed. This evening’s spray will occur between the hours of 8 p.m. and 1 a.m. as weather permits.

If you are wondering about the harshness of the chemical used during this process, the City will be using Deltaguard for spray treatments. As a rule, products used by the City of Sioux Falls are designed to break down in the environment quickly and are used at very low concentrations. Deltaguard is a product approved for use by the EPA in residential areas for adult mosquito control.
