New school and old school will coexist this weekend at the Big Sioux Rifle and Pistol Club east of Corson where a pair of shooting competitions will take place.

USPSA Pistol Match

For the new school, the Sioux Falls Practical Shooters will hold a USPSA pistol match starting Sunday at 10:00 A.M. This isn't a static stand and fire type of match. Shooters will maneuver through obstacles while trying to put shots on target. Cost for the pistol match is $20. Registration for the match begins at 9:00 A.M. Show up with 150 rounds of ammunition, ear and eye protcection, and a place to put your spare magazines. If this is your first time, pockets will do the trick.

An Intro to USPSA class is also being offered for free on Saturday from 9:00 A.M. to Noon. This will give first-timers a chance to learn the rules, range commands, and scoring. You will also have the chance to shoot a practice stage. There is no cost for the class but you will need to bring your own pistol, ammo, and gear.

I've never shot a practical competition before so I'm jacked for this. I also don't pretend to know what I'm doing so I'll be taking the class Saturday. Then I'll miss plenty of targets on Sunday.

CMP M1 Garand Match

Over the last several years I have participated in the M1 Garand matches and they are a blast, no pun intended. What's great is that you don't have own one of these classic rifles to compete in the match.

Big Sioux Rifle and Pistol Club will hold a CMP (Civilian Marksmanship Program) M1 Garand match on the 100 yard range Sunday starting at 1:00 P.M. The cost is $6 if you have your own rifle and ammo. If you don't own an M1, as I do not, you can get the 55 rounds of ammo you need and use of a club rifle for just $35. It's a really great deal and the match is a lot of fun. You'll also get plenty of help from the guys, just like I did. But please arrive early to get registered and set up.

If you're new to this kind of shoot, this video will give you a good idea of how it works. It's not an exciting video but it has good information.
