Work begins Wednesday on a project that's designed to make a stretch of Interstate 229 safer.

The State Department of Transportation says northbound and southbound lanes of I-229 between 18th and 26th Streets will get a high-friction surface treatment that's intended to reduce crashes, especially during the winter.

The DOT says the treatment will improve the friction between the tire and the road surface on the curve south of 18th Street.

The work will mean one lane of traffic at reduced speeds while the work is going on.

The project is expected to be completed by mid-August.
