If you have a child that attends McGovern Middle School, or maybe you live out in that area, get ready for slow moving traffic, several detours and a heavy dose of orange barrels.

Spring is here and so is the official start of road construction season in the Sioux Empire.

The fun begins again on Monday, March 21 with a major construction project forcing the closure of the intersection located at West Maple Street and North Marion Road.

While under construction, the city is requesting that drivers use West Benson Road, North Career Avenue, West Madison Street and North La Mesa Drive as detour routes. West Maple Street will be reconstructed about a quarter mile west of Marion Road to Career Avenue.

The plan is to convert Maple Street from a two lane to a four-lane road with turn lanes and sidewalks on both sides of the street.

Bike lanes will be added to both sides of the street, along with street lighting and utility improvements as the city readies for future growth in that area according to Assistant City Engineer Shannon VerHey.

Street crews spent a large portion of last fall prepping the area for this project. A quarter mile of Madison Street to the south was paved to prepare for detour routes so those going to and from McGovern Middle School and the nearby fire station wouldn't have to use gravel.

Traffic in that area will remain in a state of flux through November, 4, 2016 as the city works on the $6.5 million dollar project.
