Over the July 4th weekend, my family and I went down to the river. We have friends who have a cabin just off Svatos Bay a few miles from the Fort Randall Dam. We had a great weekend (Thanks Dan and Jonna)

I suppose I'm like anyone else. When out for a drive I like to look around. I like to look at the crops, cattle and other livestock along the road. One of the other things I like are some of the unusual things that people put out in pastures and on their front lawns. I came across a couple this weekend.

As I was driving back to the cabin from Lake Andes, SD I noticed a rider up on the hill carrying an American Flag. From a distance it looks real as can be. When we got to the cabin, I asked Dan if he thought it would be OK if I went and took a picture of the display. He didn't think it would be a problem so off I went.

I got to the spot, crossed the fence and started up the fresh cut hay field to get in for a closer pic. About half way up I noticed a car had pulled up behind mine on the highway. GREAT, they probably think I'm a trespasser or am going to vandalize their display. I went ahead and took a few pics as I got closer and closer, then headed back.

When I got to the bottom of the hill I introduced myself. That's when I met Burton. Burton Weaver. His wife stayed in the car. We struck up a good old roadside conversation.  He said that his son in law from Ft. Pierre had actually made the display. I commented on how nice it looked. He said his son in law would be by shortly if I wanted to talk to him. I was late for lunch so said we'd catch up another time.

Before I took off, I asked if he knew anything about the Ducks out in front of a house up the road. He said, yep, those are ours. We put them out every year! He also said that they had put the three wooden crosses up at the top of the hill (you can see them in the very distance of the pic of the horse, rider and flag)

I liked the display. The country along the Missouri River south of Lake Andes is spectacular and seeing it over the July 4th weekend made my trip.  What I liked even better was meeting Burton.

When I got back to the cabin, I told Dan about my meeting with Burton. Dan said, he used to deliver our mail. I've known him for years.

Funny things, good things and interesting things happen when your on a trip or a short vacation.

All you have to do is stop and ask. Or take a picture.
