Red Hot 3-Point Shooting Leads Augustana Past Minnesota-Duluth
DULUTH, MN — Augustana hit a season-high 14 3-pointers on its way to an 82-62 road victory over Minnesota Duluth (7-12, 5-10 NSIC) on Friday night. Ben Shellim hit a career-high five 3-pointers for the Vikings (13-8, 10-5 NSIC) finishing with 15 points and was one of five players from Augustana to reach double-digits.
Casey Schilling led the Vikings with 18 points on 5 of 9 shooting while hitting 7 of 8 from the free throw line. Matthew Brazendale scored 14 points, knocking down three 3-pointers, and was followed by Yuriy Malashenko’s 13 points and Ethan Guske’s 11.
Augustana hit seven 3-pointers in each half, shooting 50 percent (14 of 28) from behind the arc, and finished the game 27 of 55 (49 percent) from the field. The Vikings out-rebounded Minnesota Duluth 40-34, marking the eighth time this season with 40 or more rebounds. Daniel Jansen led Augustana on the glass with 10 rebounds.
Minnesota Duluth was led by Peter Crawford’s 18 points on 7 of 13 shooting, including 2 of 5 from 3-point range. Jordan Reetz was the only other Bulldog in double-figures as he added 12 points. UMD finished the game shooting 37 percent from the field, including 6 of 18 (33 percent) from 3-point range.
Guske opened up the game right where he left off last weekend, nailing a 3-pointer just 20 seconds into the contest to start the scoring in the game. UMD answered with two threes on the next two possessions to make it a 6-5 game but the Vikings went on a 13-0 run over the next 4:18 to take an 18-6 lead with 12:23 remaining in the first half.
UMD’s Reece Zoelle answered the run by hitting a 3-pointer from the left corner out of a Bulldog timeout. The Vikings missed a shot in transition and UMD got within seven after Lane Olson grabbed an offensive rebound and got the putback to make it an 18-11 game in favor of Augustana.
Shellim answered with his second 3-pointer of the half helping the Vikings start a 24-9 run over the next 7:40 to take their largest lead of the half at 42-20. Shellim (4) and Guske (3) combined for all seven of Augustana’s first-half 3-pointers as the Vikings hit 7 of 12 (58 percent) from behind the arc in the first frame.
Augustana carried a 45-26 lead into halftime after shooting 56 percent (14 of 25) from the field. Shellim finished the half 4 of 5 from 3-point range to lead all players with 12 points while Guske was 4 of 5 from the field, hitting three 3-pointers to finish with 11 points.
Minnesota Duluth was 9 of 30 (30 percent) from the field, including 3 of 10 from 3-point range. Reetz and Peter Crawford led the Bulldogs with nine points each in the first half.
Minnesota Duluth started off the second half looking like a different team going on a 15-9 run over the first four and a half minutes to cut Augustana’s lead to 13 at 54-41 with 15:19 remaining in the half. Crawford and Garrison Gillard hit back-to-back 3-pointers for the Bulldogs after Schilling hit Augustana’s eighth 3-pointer of the game.
Augustana continued to connect from 3-point range in the second half, twice pushing its lead back up to 19 after 3-pointers from Schilling and Shellim as the Vikings led 63-44 with 11:20 left in the game. Just two minutes later, Brazendale and Malashenko hit back-to-back 3-pointers to push the Vikings’ lead to 21 at 69-48.
Augustana would lead by as much as 23 points in the second half on its way to its third straight win over Minnesota Duluth.
Augustana travels to St. Cloud, Minn. Saturday night to take on St. Cloud State University. The Vikings and the Huskies will tip-off at 6 p.m. at Halenbeck Hall.
