The American Red Cross is opening a shelter at Brandon Lutheran Church located at 600 E Holly Blvd for residents displaced due to wind and storms in the area. Shelter workers are scheduled to be there throughout the night and will provide meals.

I stopped in to the shelter Monday night June 22, 2015 to see helpful Red Cross volunteers who were stocked with supplies from diapers to water and bedding.  Sally Timm, a Red Cross Volunteer veteran of 15 years seemed in her element as well as newcomers Brindia Hall, Jane Behnke and John Cuellar.  They showed me how the church basement was transformed for sleeping later in the evening, talked of preparing meals and how the group decided to bring the meals to those in Garretson who were busily working to clean up storm rather than taking a break to come to the shelter and get food.

The Red Cross is directing all those in need of shelter for the night to please check in at the shelter. Caseworkers will continue working with those impacted. So far, 11 families have reached out for assistance in the Garretson area. Additional families in Hartford, Dolton, and Lower Brule also have homes damaged significantly that are receiving Red Cross assistance with lodging and food.

In addition, Red Cross volunteers are taking water around via an Emergency Response Vehicle in the affected neighborhoods in Garretson to provide hydration as residents continue the clean-up efforts. Red Cross volunteers will continue meal service to responders assisting at the Garretson Fire Department as well.
