Drake Says Posthumous Aaliyah Project Is Happening
It was reported last week that Drake and his longtime producer Noah “40″ Shebib were co-executive producing the posthumous Aaliyah project amid some controversy. During an interview with MuchMusic, the Young Money superstar confirmed that an album is in the works.
The just-released Aaliyah single, ‘Enough Said,’ was only a teaser of bigger things to come from the album, according to Drizzy. “People should be really excited man, you know a lot of people thought it was my single, it’s not my single,” he said. “It’s all off of an Aaliyah project that me and “40″ are commanding and “40″ is just doing some incredible, incredible music right now.”
Despite reports that Aaliyah’s family (well, maybe just her brother Rashad) is not co-signing the project, Drake said that the family is supportive of the album, which will include 13 or 14 new tracks. The 25-year-old rap superstar insists that the project is not about him it’s about her fans who have been yearning for some new material from Aaliyah. “It’s not about me, it’s not about 40, it’s really about her and her fans, and us getting the opportunity to give you something that we feel is great,” he said.
It’s unclear who is going to be on the project — rumor has it that Timbaland will contribute two songs — but Drake seems eager to give fans an Aaliyah album they have been patiently waiting for. “The people around her, everybody from her family to her old management and label were just like ‘If there’s anybody out that can do it right now, it’s me and “40″ and that was an honor,” he said.
“We’re going to pull in some classic people like anybody who used to work with Aaliyah and [were] essential in her career we definitely hope to have them involved,” he continues. “It’s great, you get a new Aaliyah album this year on top of everything.”
