UPDATE: According to the Argus Leader, the report of a possible child abduction near Harrisburg was the result of a misunderstanding.

The Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office said the report of a possible abduction attempt involving an 8-year-old girl south of Harrisburg turned out to be a misunderstanding.

Sheriff Dennis Johnson said the two women who approached the girl at her home were employees of the Lincoln County Assessor’s Office. They saw the girl get off the bus and tried to hand her a business card for the girl to give to her parents, Johnson said. The girl got scared and went inside the house.

The two women put the business card in the door of the home and left.

Lincoln County Sheriff Dennis Johnson says deputies received a report on Thursday of a suspicious vehicle and possible abduction attempt, and authorities are looking for a vehicle that might be involved.

Johnson says an eight-year-old girl got off the school bus at her home on 276th Street, South of Harrisburg around 4:00 p.m. Thursday. He says a newer, red Toyota pickup with Billion Auto license plates and paper plates in the window was parked in the driveway, with two women in the vehicle.

The driver was described as having short hair and a skull/heart tattoo on her neck, while the passenger was described as having long hair.

Johnson says the driver told the child she was a friend of the young girl’s mother, and asked if she would get in with them and go for a ride. But the young girl refused and ran into the house, while the red pickup left in an unknown direction.

Anyone with information in this matter is asked to contact the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office at 605-764-5651 or Crimestoppers at 1-877-367-7007. You can also leave a tip online at
