When did Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Rick Weiland know the end was nigh for the 2014 race?

Thursday.

That's when, according to a well-placed source with a history of accuracy, Weiland had an inkling that the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee was going to pull its support because of lagging poll numbers.

(This was before the independent polling announcements Sunday and Monday, so the DSCC must have been doing their own polling.)

Thus, at least according to some, Weiland’s somewhat subdued performance at Thursday evening’s South Dakota Public Broadcasting’s TV debate and his renunciation of Senate majority leader Harry Reid.

Then over the weekend, Weiland received confirmation that the DSCC was taking its money elsewhere and Monday’s meltdown, where Weiland accused the DSCC of actually wanting independent Larry Pressler to win and trying to make Weiland look like a meanie.

So, that may explain the Weiland drama we’ve seen over the past week.
