Sioux Falls Father Hits Son with Belt, Faces Felony Child Abuse Charges

Sioux Falls Police Information Officer Sam Clemens says a father faces charges after hitting his nine-year-old son with a belt.

"We had a staff member that noticed injury to the Cleveland Elementary school student on Tuesday. They called the school resource officer who then investigated the incident. We found out this happened sometime Monday afternoon. The father had hit his son with a belt."

Clemens says the staff person at the school did the right thing by contacting authorities after seeing the child.

"This is one of the things they receiving training for. The staff member did exactly what they were supposed to do. This is designed to make sure people are held accountable for doing this. Most important to let people to know it's not all right to discipline your child with a belt."

Clemens says 29-year-old Darrious Germaine Franklin of Sioux Falls was arrested and charged with felony child abuse.
