By using a variation of the “broken windows” policy, Sioux Falls Police used a small violation to turn up something big in Pettigrew Heights on Saturday night.

“Broken windows” is the universal method of policing in which officers follow up on little crimes like vandalism in an attempt to prevent bigger crimes from happening. Lt. Dave McIntire says Sioux Falls Police is focusing intently on the Pettigrew neighborhood.

“We have seen incidents in the Pettigrew area that get people’s attention. We have taken a very serious approach to putting extra patrols in that area. This is priority one for us.”

McIntire says a traffic stop for a broken taillight possibly prevented a future crime from transpiring.

“In this case, we ended up arresting an individual because he had 58 grams of marijuana, 8 grams of methamphetamine, 2 grams of cocaine and a 9 millimeter pistol in his possession.”

Taylor Vincent Smith, 36, of Sioux Falls was arrested for possession of a firearm while committing a felony, possession with intent to distribute marijuana and possession of a controlled substance. Smith was also allegedly sending threatening text messages intending to harm the recipient with the gun.
