People shopping in the area of the Food Court of the Empire Mall on Monday night were asked to leave early by the Sioux Falls police department.

An unsubstantiated bomb threat was the reason for the evacuation.

The incident happened around 7:00 PM on Monday, June 1.

Workers near the food court area of the Mall said they saw police with police dogs in the food court area. Sergeant Jon Thum of the Sioux Falls police department said Mall patrons were allowed back in around 7:30 PM after officials had the opportunity to inspect the area and determine there was no threat.

Kyle Henning, a general manager at Culver's in the food court, said his restaurant closed for the night after the bomb threat. Henning wasn't initially told why the food court was  being evacuated, but later found out it was because of a bomb threat.

Culver's in the Mall elected to shut everything off early, since the feeling at the time was no one else would want to come back into the food court area again that evening. Normally his restaurant closes at 9:00 PM.
