Parents Should Be Aware of a Children’s Cold Syrup Recall
When a little one starts to feel stuffy and develops a cough, chances are a parent or caregiver will reach for a bottle of cold syrup to try to ease the cold symptoms.
But if that cold syrup has been purchased at a Dollar General, CVS or Rite-Aid, parents and caregivers should be aware of an ongoing recall. Nine over-the-counter drug retailers have announced a recall of two flavors of children's liquid cold medicine because of the risk of a potential overdose.
The products are sold nationwide under several different brand names, but they are all being recalled - not because of what's in the bottle - but the package itself. The drug manufacturer Perrigo Company, is reporting that the dosage cups have incorrect markings, which could lead to a child being given more than the correct dosage of the cold syrup.
The recall includes children's guaifenesin grape liquid and guaifenesin DM cherry liquid sold in 4 oz. bottles with the dosage cup in a box.
The grape flavored cold syrups involved in the recall were sold under the H.E.B. label and have a lot number 5LK0592, and the CVS label with a a lot number 5MK0340. Both products have expiration dates of 08/2017.
There are several cherry flavored cold syrups involved in the recall.
Perrigo Company and Food and Drug Administration say that the mislabeled dosage cups could lead to serious side effects or even death. An overdose of Guaifenesin DM could cause children to develop symptoms that include, but are not limited to, rapid eye movement, hallucinations, stupor and coma. A statement from Perrigo also said children may experience nausea, vomiting, irregular heartbeat, seizures, respiratory depression or even death.
