Both One Direction and former Oasis member Liam Gallagher appeared at the Olympics’ closing ceremony this weekend — and that’s not the only thing they have in common. Seems that not long ago, 1D covered the Oasis hit ‘Wonderwall,’ which is the same song Gallagher performed at Sunday night’s festivities.

The video for 1D’s version of the sing-along anthem was shot last year on the same California beach where the guys made their ‘What Makes You Beautiful’ video, but was only released just this week.

Call us cynics, but the timing isn’t surprising. Given the zillions of people who watched Gallagher sing on Sunday, it’s no wonder 1D would want to capitalize on some of the newfound buzz around the song that charted in more than a dozen countries back in 1995.

This certainly isn’t 1D’s first cover — in concert, they’ve performed Gym Class Heroes‘ ‘Stereo Hearts,’ Natalie Imbruglia’s ‘Torn,’ Kings of Leon’s ‘Use Somebody’ and the Zutons’ ‘Valerie’ — but as far as we know, this is the first time they’ve tackled a beloved alt-rock classic. And the comments about it on Twitter have been mixed, to say the least.

But never mind all that. Take a listen yourself and let us know what you think.
