Off The Tee: U.S. Open Recap, Goodbye to NBC, Can Tiger Come Back?

Last week’s U.S. Open at Pinehurst was exactly what you’d expect from golf’s second major, a beautiful, challenging course, near par scoring, and a very competitive leaderboard.

For everyone in the field not named Martin Kaymer.

The German lapped the field, finishing nine under par, good for an eight shot win, to capture his second major tournament.

In this installment of ‘Off The Tee’, 4 Deep Golf’s Joel Harrington examines what exactly Kaymer did right in North Carolina to distance himself from the best players in the world:

The U.S. Open did signal the end of an era for televised golf, as NBC broadcast its’ final Open, with FOX taking over the tournament coverage next year.

I asked Joel about the move and whether NBC, and outspoken lead commentator Johnny Miller, will be missed by golf fans:

A lot of the talk about the conditions at Pinehurst centered around how brown the coure looked compared to previous U.S. Open courses.  That will be on display again this week at the Women’s U.S. Open takes over the course.

Joel says the ‘brown look’ is all part of the US Golf Association’s master plan:

Tiger Woods missed yet another major as he continues to recover from back surgery, but the former #1 player in the world was back in the news this week, when his agent announced that Tiger was taking full golf swings for the first time as part of his rehab.

Despite that progress report, Joel is standing by his assertion that Tiger will not play a round of competitive golf this entire season:
