Nordgaard Goes For Monster Night In Vikings’ Win
SIOUX FALLS, SD — Augustana used some hot shooting straight out of NBA Jam in a 97-75 wire-to-wire win over Upper Iowa on Saturday in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference play. The Vikings second-straight win improved their record 13-9 (9-9 NSIC). The Peacocks fell to 5-17 (4-14 NSIC).
Riley Nordgaard put on quite a display for the fans at the Elmen Center, nearly registering a quadruple-double with 18 points, 11 rebounds, seven assists, and eight steals. Nordgaard, getting her third double-double on the year, finished the game on 7-of-16 shooting.
Shaunteva Ashley finished with a game-high 25 points, one of five Augustana players in double figures on the day with Nordgaard (18), Rhianna Gullickson (16), Emily Schulte (12), and Sydney Rome (10) being the other four.
The Vikings shot a season-high 60.7 percent on the day (34 of 56), making it the best performance Augustana has had since defeating Clayton State last season in the NCAA Tournament.
Upper Iowa was led by Sam Thrapp, who finished with 14 points and five assists. Whitney Kieffer contributed with 13 points and nine rebounds.
The Vikings finished with 13 3-pointers in the win on 27 attempts (48.1 percent), the second most they have made in a game this season.
The Vikings grabbed control early and never let go, jumping out to a 9-2 lead after a Nordgaard three forced an Upper Iowa timeout at the 16:33 mark.
Nordgaard continued her hot start, getting her seventh point in on a layup, putting Augustana up 14-2 with less than five minutes into the game.
The Canby, Minn. native would head to the bench after her very successful first stint with 12 points on an impressive 5-of-7 shooting and two blocks, the blocks already setting a new career high.
The Vikings would push their lead out to 15 at 39-24 after a made pair of Ashley free throws with 6:15 remaining in the period. It would give Ashley her 11th point of the half, extending her streak of scoring in double-figures to 10 games.
Augustana would continue its big first half after a made basket by Gullickson gave the Vikings 50 points in the half, the ninth time this year they have accomplished the feat.
Augustana went into halftime leading 50-38 over Upper Iowa, a score that didn’t indicate just how much the Vikings were in control in the first 20 minutes.
The Vikings hot-shooting first half resulted in a blistering 66.7 percent from the field (18 of 27), the first time Augustana has done that all season.
Thrapp led the Peacocks with 11 points in the first half.
A Rome three kicked things off in the second half. Rome’s three was the seventh of the game for the Vikings on just their 11th attempt. The Sioux Falls, S.D. native would follow it up with made jumper in the paint, giving Augustana a 55-38 a minute into the half.
The Vikings used a mini 7-3 run to take a 15-point lead into the first media timeout at 14:45 with Augustana up 62-47.
Schulte became the fourth Viking in double figures with 11 points after hitting her third 3-pointer of the game with 15:26 remaining.
Augustana would put this one out of reach shortly after, scoring in a variety of ways with multiple players.
The Vikings’ lead got up to 20 at 80-60 after a Schulte connected on one of two from the foul line. It was the senior’s 12th and final point of the contest.
Augustana got its fifth player in double figures after Rome connected on her second 3-pointer of the game, giving her 10 points and the Vikings an 85-63 lead.
Augustana kept it steady after that, getting the 97-75 win.
The Vikings finished with 24 fast break points after 18 Upper Iowa turnovers.
Augustana is home again for two games next week to wrap up a four-game home stand. The Vikings face Minnesota State Moorhead on Friday at 6 p.m. Augustana wraps up the home stand on Saturday against No. 22 Northern State at 4 p.m.
