Horseshoe Lake, near Webster, SD. has produces a state record bass in 2013, and it is the same lake that broke that record last week.

Two Minnesota anglers, Lyal Held and Casey Ehlert, were fishing Saturday morning when Lyal reeled in a  7-pound, 3-ounce smallmouth bass using an Alabama jig.

After thinking that it might be a new state record, they put the smallie in a tub full of water to have it verified and certified - and then released it back into the lake.

I’ve never seen anything so fat. It was so fat its eyes were bulging. It was a freak. - Lyal Held

The catch was determined to be 3-ounces over the previous state record.
