New SculptureWalk Pieces to be Placed in Sioux Falls
The Sioux Falls SculptureWalk is in its 14th year and continues again this summer.
Program coordinator Jim Clark says there are more than just the pieces for viewing downtown as part of SculptureWalk. Items are on display throughout the city including both hospitals and University of Sioux Falls.
Artists featured are from around the world and here at home, with five being from Sioux Falls and ten from South Dakota. Fourteen new artists join the fold this year.
The top 56 sculptures have been selected for this year. Sculpture materials are made of bronze, stainless steel, cement, marble and new this year, iron.
Clarke says there are fewer works of art depicting children this year, and more abstract pieces.
After several displays last year were damaged at the hands of vandals, the structural integrity of each piece is also taken into consideration. Questions are asked of the artist as to how it is assembled, as neither the city or the artist wants to see the artwork damaged.
Artists are invited to a reception on May 5th and the new sculptures are placed May 6th.
Each artist receives a one thousand dollar honorarium and has the benefit of possibly selling their piece privately.
