Nebraska Cornhuskers Rout South Alabama, Head to Miami to Battle Hurricanes
It was just what the doctor ordered for the Nebraska Cornhuskers heading into a big early season, non-conference road game - a complete, well executed win.
That's exactly what the Huskers dialed up last weekend in Lincoln as they beat South Alabama 48-9 at Memorial Stadium.
I talked with the 'Voice of the Huskers' Greg Sharpe about the win, which saw Nebraska rack up some big numbers on the ground, with Terrell Newby rushing for 198 yards, and maybe putting the Big Red running back rotation on hold for now.
Quarterback Tommy Armstrong continued to impress, going 21-of-30, including a pair of touchdown passes, to move to the top of the heap among Big Ten passers with five touchdowns and just one interception in the first two weeks.
Armstrong had a surprise target Saturday, Lane Hovey, who snagged five catches, matching his entire output from the past two seasons.
Defensively, Nebraska was without injured linebackers Josh Bandaras and Dedrick Young, but did see the return of Micheal Rose-Ivey, who made an immediate impact, leading the team in tackles. Sioux Falls native Nate Gerry added an interception for the Husker secondary.
This week it's the latest in what's been a special rivalry in college football for the past three decades - Nebraska and Miami. Four times in the past when the Huskers and Hurricanes hooked up, there was a national championship on the line. Saturday's match-up in South Florida will feature a pair of unranked teams, in what will be Nebraska's first regular season visit to the Sunshine State since 1951.
Miami tuned up for the Nebraska game by beating Florida Atlantic 44-20. For the Hurricanes, quarterback Brad Kaaya threw for 287 yards and a touchdown, while running back Joe Yearby finished with 243 total yards and scored twice. Miami's balance and ability to throw deep will challenge the Husker defense Saturday.
The Hurricane defense did allow 223 yards on the ground in the win over FAU, but forced five turnovers. Miami's seven takeaways tie them for best in the nation after two games. If Nebraska can hang on to the ball, they will have a chance to pick up some yards on the ground against the Miami defense.
