My Idea for Fireworks in Sioux Falls

Independence Day has come and gone. Dogs, burgers, and brats were grilled. Beverages were drank. Fireworks were fired.

Lots of fireworks were fired. So many were fired in Sioux Falls that the police received 501 complaints and issued 17 citations.

As someone who wakes up at 4:30 AM every day you might think I am irritated by the noise. Generally, no I am not. I can put my ear buds in and play some soft classical music to lull me to sleep.

What I can’t use headphones for is picking up all the fireworks debris that lands in my yard. I didn’t put it there, a neighbor did. Likely a neighbor kid put it there. This is no different than throwing a candy bar wrapper in my yard and it’s a mess I have to clean up. I don’t like it. In fact, it really aggravates me.

Before you call me a Scrooge let me run this by you: how would you feel if I came over to your house with my garbage can and threw it’s contents all over your property. Does that sound acceptable? Of course not. That’s called littering. It’s against the law and so is setting off fireworks in the city limits of Sioux Falls.

Here’s where I prove my un-Scrooge-ness. I am not against setting off fireworks in town. If it isn’t super dry, which it is not right now, setting off fireworks that do not leave the ground or completely burn up in the air, I think those types should be allowed on Independence Day. As long as you aren’t letting s*** land in your neighbors’ yards, knock yourself out.
