Mumford & Sons Win Album of the Year
fun. and Frank Ocean were multiple Grammy Award winners Sunday night, but both were upended for the biggest award of the evening, Album of the Year, by British folk-rock band Mumford & Sons, who claimed the trophy for ‘Babel.’
The award was presented by the woman who won it a year ago, Adele. She joked that while most Album of the Year winners go on to greater success, some just “get knocked up, like last year’s winner.”
Much of Mumford & Sons’ acceptance speech was bleeped thought. Frontman Marcus Mumford apparently used an expletive when he was explaining that his band didn’t win anything last year because Adele swept all the big categories. The group thanked the Recording Academy for embracing British acts.
fun. had been a strong contender for ‘Some Nights,’ but the group still walked away with Best New Artist and Song of the Year for ‘We Are Young.’ Ocean’s ‘Channel Orange’ was the clear critical favorite of the year, and his consolation prize was awards for Best Urban Contemporary Album and for Best Rap/Sung Collaboration for ‘No Church in the Wild’ with Kanye West, Jay-Z and The-Dream.
