Authorities needed to put down a mountain lion in Spearfish, South Dakota on Wednesday (May 10) after it attacked and killed a dog.

KDLT News is reporting that a Spearfish resident was witness to the attack just before 10:00 PM on Tuesday (May 9).

The man spotted the lion, made some noise which distracted the animal forcing it to drop the dog before the lion was able to carry it away. The mountain lion then quickly ran off.

The witness immediately called the Spearfish Police Department to inform them of the animal attack. Spearfish police notified the South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks Department who successfully tracked the mountain lion with the help of special tracking dogs on Wednesday morning.

The lion was found just outside the Spearfish city limits and euthanized.

According to KDLT News, the the animal was a sub-adult lion.
