Expect to see more police officers in downtown Sioux Falls, and expect to see them on a regular basis.

The Sioux Falls Police Department is expanding a program that has three officers permanently assigned to the downtown area for the afternoon shift, and Captain Rich Miller says two more will be assigned for the morning shift and two others for the night shift.

Miller says assigning officers is the right move because more people live downtown, and the area has more businesses and more nightlife.

Miller says a citizen survey indicated some people didn't feel safe downtown, but he says it is a safe place, and that the officers who work downtown employ foot and bike patrols to help ensure that safety.
